The American League Division Series between Cleveland and Chicago has become this October’s most volatile contest, the teams trading the lead across a week in which a bases-clearing triple, a go-ahead home run from the franchise player and a final-three-outs survival have all belonged, in turn, to the Guardians.

The pattern began with Cleveland striking first in Game 2 before Chicago’s full-inning rally took the lead in the sixth, continued through a four-run Guardians inning built on Jo Adell’s bases-clearing triple in Game 3, a Cade Smith save that kept Cleveland alive, and José Ramírez manufacturing a run with his legs in the fifth inning of the same game. By Game 4 on 8 October, Chicago were rallying back in the fifth to retake a lead the series has refused to let anyone keep — a sequence of comebacks that suggests two evenly matched pitching staffs being solved, inning by inning, by lineups that refuse the script.

In the National League, Los Angeles produced the week’s cleanest late-inning execution: bases loaded in the seventh inning of Game 4 against Atlanta on 7 October, Andy Pages delivering the hit that took the lead, and a full-game performance that underlined why the Dodgers’ depth remains the division series’ most reliable weapon. Milwaukee and San Diego, meanwhile, traded power blows of their own, Fernando Tatís Jr. crushing a game-tying home run to centre in their Game 4 as the Padres refused elimination’s first invitation.

October baseball compresses a season’s truths into single innings, and this week’s truth is depth under pressure. Cleveland’s survival has come from different hitters in different innings; Los Angeles’ threat is that the decisive swing can arrive from the bottom of the order with the bases full. Bullpens, benches and the second look at a tiring starter — the unglamorous machinery — are deciding series that stars headline.

The morning instruction for viewers is simple: do not leave these games early. Three of this week’s defining results turned after the fifth inning, and the Guardians-White Sox series in particular has made a habit of punishing assumption. The bracket will simplify soon enough; while it lasts, this is the best baseball of the year arriving nightly.
