The Tampa Bay Buccaneers claimed their first victory of the season by beating the Dallas Cowboys 24-16 on 8 October, a result built on a rookie quarterback’s first career start win and a running performance that controlled the evening: 165 rushing yards for Bucky Irving, including a 72-yard touchdown.

For Dallas, the defeat deepens the season’s central concern. Coverage of the Cowboys this week has centred on an offence diminished by injury — CeeDee Lamb’s absence allowing defences to load up against the remaining playmakers — and a unit already struggling has now been beaten by the last winless team it would have chosen for a recovery fixture. Alex Anzalone’s interception sealed Tampa Bay’s win, but the game was won earlier, on the ground, where Irving’s long score and sustained yardage kept the Cowboys’ offence watching from the sideline.

First wins change a locker room’s arithmetic out of proportion to one result. Tampa Bay move from the psychology of the winless — every week a referendum on the whole project — to the ordinary pressures of a season still recoverable, and they do it with a rookie quarterback who now owns a road win against a name opponent and a running back whose film will command defensive attention, and therefore space for everyone else, next week.

Dallas face the harder questions, and they are structural rather than emotional. If the offence cannot function without its leading receiver, the roster behind him is too thin; if the defence cannot stop the run against a team that had not yet won, the problem extends beyond any single injury. Both conclusions were available before this game; 24-16 against Tampa Bay makes them impossible to postpone.

Week 5 now arrives with the usual undefeated-season narratives already dead and the playoff picture scrambled early. Tampa Bay have a foundation win and a running identity. Dallas have ten days of deserved scrutiny — and the knowledge that in this league, the team everyone wants to play is a title no one keeps by choice.

Irving’s 72-yard touchdown will lead the highlights, but coaches will grade the quieter carries — the four-yard gains on first down that kept Tampa Bay out of third-and-long and let a rookie quarterback play ahead of the chains all night. Game plans travel; that one, built on a back in rhythm, travels straight into next week’s defensive meeting rooms across the league.
