Lynn is set to celebrate the creativity of African American artists this week at Lynn Museum/LynnArts. 

The African-American In The Arts: A Black History Month Celebration exhibition will start Feb. 19 and conclude Feb. 23.

Lynn Museum/LynnArts Executive Director Doneeca Thurston-Chavez said the events will have something for everyone.

“We want attendees to have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the contributions of Black artists, authors, musicians, and creatives while also taking the time to make art inspired by these incredible talents, both locally and nationally,” Thurston-Chavez said. “We wanted to include different art forms (painting, embroidery, collage, poetry, and more) to showcase the talent and skill Black creatives have honed over the decades and centuries and how Black artists have amplified the arts. We also wanted to work with local artists to explore these art forms further and have them share their personal stories and creative abilities with our community.”

The following events are free and open to the public. 

“The Pieces of Me” Sewing Workshop with ZNT Arts on Tuesday, Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Guest artist Zahirah Nur Truth of ZNT Arts joins Lynn Museum/LynnArts to offer an interactive hand-sewing project, “The Pieces of Me.” Attendees will learn about the history of sewing, quilting, and patchwork through the African Diaspora and talk about how hand sewing was used to tell stories, pass on knowledge, and share feelings. Participants will be able to develop their own stories through art. All materials will be provided, and no experience is necessary.

Storytime with North Shore Juneteenth Association, Inc. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Join Founder, President, and Councilwoman Nicole McClain for storytime sponsored by North Shore Juneteenth Association, Inc. Listen to some of McClain’s favorite stories for Black History Month and some books from the museum.

Afrobeats Dance Workshop with Afrobeats Dance Boston on Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Poetry Workshop with Enzo Silon Surin on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Swampscott-based and award-winning poet, educator, publisher, and social advocate Enzo Silon Surin offers a 60-minute workshop about the power of telling one’s own story. This experience is geared towards people with different writing experiences and is open to all.

Painting Workshop with Michael Aghahowa on Friday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

Join Lynn’s artist and educator, Michael Aghahowa, for a community painting workshop. Inspired by Michael’s portraiture work and others, participants will be able to create a portrait of a prominent Black figure in history.
