Swampscott seeking solid candidates for Solid Waste Advisory Committee
Press Releases

The Town of Swampscott announced it is still seeking volunteers for both the Solid Waste Advisory and Climate Action Plan Committees.

SWAC is looking to add three resident voting members, while CAPC has one position open. The town expressed a preference that it be filled by a high school student to receive input from the town’s youth demographic.

The three positions for SWAC became available when the committee’s Select Board liaison, MaryEllen Fletcher, proposed a realignment to the committee in January. She proposed to remove herself, Public Health Director Jeff Vaughan, and Director of Public Works Gino Cresta as voting members in order to give them more flexibility to balance their responsibilities while opening up opportunities for other community members to become more directly involved.

“They will still be attending meetings,” Fletcher said at a Select Board meeting in January. “This way, they’re not going to tie up a quorum. We’re going to put in three residents who could actually be working members of the committee. It should move a lot more efficiently.”

The Solid Waste Advisory Committee’s responsibilities include tracking results of the town’s Solid Waste Policy, which they are also in charge of recommending changes and updates to the policy itself. Last December, SWAC passed a bylaw prohibiting food establishments in Swampscott from distributing single-use takeout containers and utensils containing common single-use plastics.

CAPC’s mission is to develop the town’s Climate Action Plan. They are one committee that makes up “Resilient Swampscott.”
