3 Tips for Disposing of Grease and Cooking Oil
Business

While grease and cooking oil help make delicious meals, they can be a hassle when it comes to disposal. Not only are these residues bad for the environment, but pouring either down the drain will cause pipes to clog. To keep your plumbing in good working order, use these three tips for disposing of grease and cooking oil.

1. Let It Cool

Wait for grease and cooking oil to cool to room temperature before disposing of them. Scalding hot or even warm liquids can cause injuries or damage.

Cooling also makes it much easier to dispose of grease; grease is what remains after cooking fats, and it often solidifies at room temperature. On the other hand, oil remains liquid at room temperature.

2. Consider Reusing Oil

Before tossing your oil out, consider reusing it. As a general rule, you can reuse oil that’s been used to fry breaded and battered foods three or four times. Oil used for frying foods that don’t deposit much into the oil can be reused many more times. If the oil looks cloudy, has a layer of film on the top, or has a strange odor, do not reuse it.

Once the oil cools, filter it through a fine-mesh strainer, cheesecloth, or both. Once you’ve removed the food particles from the oil, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

3. Toss It in the Trash

The biggest tip for disposing of grease and cooking oil is to place it in a sealable container, like a jar or old detergent bottle, before throwing it in the trash. Never pour hot oil or grease into the trash, as it can melt through the trash bag. Additionally, putting the oil or grease in a sealed container will prevent spills.

For smaller amounts of grease or oil left in a pan, wipe the pan with a paper towel to keep the sticky residue out of your sink. Grease can harden in pipes and build up over time, leading to serious clogging. Tossing grease and oil into the trash can rather than down the sink is one of the easiest ways to prevent sewer backups.
